Cancun International Airport Information

Getting to Isla Mujeres

1.) FLY TO CANCUN - There are direct flights from many major cities.Cancun International Airport is 16 kilometers (9 miles) southwest of the heart of Cancun City, 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the southernmost point of the hotel zone. Follow the crowd down the escalator to the immigration area where you will present your Tourist Card and Passport or Birth Certificate. Remember to put your Tourist Card in a safe place; you will need it to leave the country. You will first pass through Immigration, where your passport or other entry documents are examined. You then collect your luggage and pass through Customs. In Customs you will be asked to press a button connected to a little traffic light that will determine whether your bags are searched; green light, and you just walk through, or red light and your bags are inspected.

2.) GO TO PUERTO JUAREZ or GRAN PUERTO to catch a ferry. If you're flying into Cancun, you've got a few choices on how you get to the ferries. The airport shuttles, located outside the baggage claim, are very reliable and reasonably priced (around 12 U.S. dollars per person). This is probably the most reasonable manner to get to Puerto Juarez, although you may be required to make a few stops through Cancun to drop off fellow renters at their hotels.

If you just can't wait to get there, you will need to take a cab. All the cabs leaving Cancun International Airport belong to one company, therefore, you have little choice and no bargaining power. Just tell the representative where you want to go and how many people are in your party. Pay up and get going. The less fuss, the faster you'll get out of there and the sooner you'll arrive in paradise.

*Shoestring Travelers: If you're feeling adventurous or just want the cheapest means to get to Isla, you can take the buses. When you leave the terminal go directly to your right and follow the sidewalk along the departures section until you come to the end. There you'll find the very comfortable and air conditioned buses run by ADO. The cost is next to nothing, but you have to walk a ways to get there. This bus will drop you at the bus station in downtown Cancun. From there you can take a taxi (for much less) to the dock or can walk out and wait for another bus heading to Puerto Juarez. Another option is to take the public taxis located outside the airport property. Although its much cheaper, you will have to haul your luggage quite a distance, and taxis aren't always readily available and it isn't "exactly" legal.

If you arrive any other way, just get to one of the ports. Take a bus, take a cab or just drive.
If you're not taking a car to the island, and you shouldn't have to unless you live there, you'll want to head for Puerto Juarez. This is both an area of town as well as the name of one of the docks. The other is named Gran Puerto. There are two express services currently serving the island.

If you are coming by car, you'll want to head a little further north about 5 miles to Punta Sam to find the car ferry.

If you are already in Cancun, the best way to get to the island is to hop in a taxi and go directly to Puerto Juarez. There are other boats that can bring you here from the hotel zone, but they can cost up to $25 USD. Getting a taxi from the hotel zone to Puerto Juarez is ridiculously expensive, so we suggest taking a bus (7 Pesos) to anywhere in the downtown area, then hopping in a taxi. The taxi fare is 35 Pesos maximun, which will save you up to $8 USD. There is also the Ruta 13 buses that can take you directly from the hotel zone to Puerto Juarez, but at times they can be difficult to find and the ride can take up to an hour to get to the port.

3.) TAKE A FERRY TO ISLA MUJERES - Here, you will buy your $3.50 per person round trip ticket for the ferry. The ferry ride is about 15 minutes from Cancun to Isla Mujeres. The ferry runs every 30 minutes from 5:30am to 1:00am.

4.) TAKE A TAXI TO Casa Tranquila or Villa Tranquila - Once on the island, you can either take a taxi to your hotel for about $3 or you can walk to your hotel. Just ask someone or view your map to see where your hotel is located. If you need pesos before you take your taxi, you can walk accross the street to the HSBC bank ATM.

A Few Island Tips

~Bring your passport. Regulations have changed as of January 2007. You must have a passport to enter Mexico from the United States. If you do not have a passport, order it now. Passports can take 4 to 8 weeks to arrive.

~There is an HSBC bank on the island right where your ferry arrives. Use their ATM, and you will get a better exchange rate here than in the airport.

~The exchange rate is easy. It's about $1 US dollar to $10 Mexican pesos

~Everyone takes dollars or pesos on the island, but you will get more for your money if you use pesos.

~It is best to have cash instead of credit cards because some places don't take credit cards, or they charge a higher rate.

~The main mode of transportation is walking or you can rent a bike for $7/day, a scooter for $25/day, or a golf cart for $40/day.
~There are lots of great restaurants on the beach and in town, especially on the main street, Avenue Hidalgo.

~Around town you will see many dive shops that can take you out for snorkelling, scuba diving, or deep sea fishing. There are also many day trips from the island to different cities and ruins in the Mayan Riviera.

~You will want to drink bottled water, which is available everywhere. And you might want to even brush your teeth with bottled water, I did!

~All iced drinks are fine because they are made from bags of ice. So don't be afraid of a pina colada.

~Most modern cell phones will work down there. Just call your plan to check if there are extra charges or to activate international calls.

~Internet access is easy. Our homes are equipped with wireless internet connections. There are internet cafes all over town that are $1.50 an hour. You can use their computers or bring your own.
